From the beginnings of communism in China, the Mandarin phrase, “tong zhi”, has been used to signify comrade. In modern China, “tong zhi” has been appropriated by the LGBT community and can now be understood as the battle cry of sexual liberation and the fight for LGBT rights. “Tong Zhi” is coded in a way that speaks to the revolutionaries of both communist China and the modern LGBT movement, like a Trojan horse it goes undetected but is no less powerful in its push for progress.
In the Chinese letter of "TongZhi", there are two parts if isolated them from the letter also can be read as "the same heart". See picture 2
TongZhi is my thesis project of OCAD University illustration bachelor degrees.
